What the BMW X3 VIN decoder shows

The X3 is one of BMW’s best-selling models in the US. Since the 2011 model year it has been built at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, which is why most X3 VINs start with a 5 instead of a W. Our decoder shows:

  • Exact model: for example xDrive30i, sDrive30i, M40i, 30 xDrive or M50 xDrive. BMW encodes the model type in characters 4 to 7.
  • Generation: E83, F25, G01 or G45, based on the model year and model code.
  • Engine and powertrain: 2.0L turbo four, 3.0L six, diesel or plug-in hybrid.
  • Drivetrain: rear-wheel drive (sDrive) or xDrive all-wheel drive.
  • Model year and assembly plant: from characters 10 and 11.
  • Open safety recalls: any recall on record with NHTSA for that exact VIN.

BMW X3 recalls

Recalls are issued for specific VINs, so two X3 of the same year can have different results. Repairs for safety recalls are free at any BMW center, even if you are not the first owner. Important recent X3 campaigns include:

  • Starter and starter relay (2025–2026): many 2020–2024 X3 are part of multi-model recalls because the starter or its relay can overheat, with a risk of fire.
  • 2025 X3 (G45) early-build recalls: the first model year of the new X3 had several recalls, including rear brake hoses that may leak, battery cable and starter-generator connections that may loosen, and steering parts.
  • Rear door locks (2025): some 2022–2024 xDrive30i and sDrive30i were recalled because the rear door locks can open with one motion.

Enter the VIN above to see every recall on record for that exact vehicle and whether it is still open.

Common BMW X3 problems by generation

These are issues that owners and independent mechanics often report. They don’t affect every X3, but they are worth checking on a used one:

GenerationOften reportedWhat to check
G45 (2025–)Several first-year recalls and software updatesAll recalls completed, software up to date
G01 (2018–2024)Generally good reliability, especially the M40i with the B58 six; oil and coolant leaks with ageStarter recall done, leaks, service history
F25 (2011–2017)Timing chain wear on the N20 four (28i); oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks; transfer case actuator faults on xDrive; emissions parts on the diesel 28dTiming chain records, oil leaks, smooth AWD at low speed, diesel emissions repairs
E83 (2004–2010)Oil leaks, cooling system parts and transfer case faults as the vehicles ageCooling system and transfer case repair records

How to verify an M40i, M50 or X3 M

Performance X3 models cost much more, so some vehicles are re-badged to look like a better model. To check:

  1. Decode the VIN and read the model name and engine it returns.
  2. Compare them with the badge and the seller’s listing.
  3. A real X3 M starts with 5YM, not 5UX.
  4. If the VIN says xDrive30i but the X3 is badged M40i, it is not that model.

Where to find the VIN on a BMW X3

Where to find the VIN on a vehicle: on the dashboard by the windshield and on the label inside the driver’s door jamb
The VIN is on the dashboard (seen through the windshield) and on the label inside the driver’s door.
  • Dashboard: on the driver’s side, visible through the lower windshield.
  • Driver’s door pillar: on the label on the B-pillar when the door is open.
  • Under the hood: also stamped in the engine bay on many models.
  • Documents: title, registration and insurance card.

Buying a used BMW X3: checklist

  • The VIN on the dashboard, door pillar and title all match.
  • The model, engine and drivetrain from the VIN match the badge and the listing.
  • No open safety recalls, or proof they were completed.
  • No salvage, flood or rebuilt title brand, and odometer readings that go up steadily.
  • Service records, including oil changes at the recommended interval.
  • On a 2012–2017 X3 28i, ask about the timing chain.
  • On a 2014–2017 xDrive28d diesel, ask about emissions system repairs.
  • On an xDrive30e plug-in hybrid, check that the battery charges and the electric range is normal.
  • Check what is left of the factory warranty or BMW Certified Pre-Owned coverage.
  • A pre-purchase inspection by a BMW specialist.

Before you buy, run a full vehicle history check to see title brands, accidents, odometer readings and past sales, or see a sample report.

Options and window sticker

The VIN shows the model, engine, drivetrain, plant and year. Factory options such as the M Sport package, Premium Package, driver-assistance packages or paint color are stored in BMW’s build record, not in the VIN. A BMW center can look them up by VIN.
