What the BMW 5 Series VIN decoder shows
The 5 Series has been sold in the US with four-cylinder, six-cylinder and V8 gas engines, a diesel, two kinds of hybrid and, since 2024, as the all-electric i5. Prices between versions differ by tens of thousands of dollars, so knowing the exact model matters. Our decoder shows:
- Exact model: for example 530i, 540i xDrive, M550i, 530e or i5. BMW encodes the model type in characters 4 to 7.
- Generation: E60, F10, G30 or G60, based on the model year and model code.
- Engine and powertrain: 2.0L turbo four, 3.0L turbo six, 4.4L twin-turbo V8, diesel, plug-in hybrid or electric.
- Drivetrain: rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive.
- Model year and assembly plant: from characters 10 and 11.
- Open safety recalls: any recall on record with NHTSA for that exact VIN.
BMW 5 Series generations in the US
Most used 5 Series for sale in the US today belong to the last four generations. Use the model year to see which one you have:

xDrive all-wheel drive is available on most models and shows as “xDrive” (or “xi” on older cars) in the model name. The M5 is a separate high-performance model with its own VIN code.

How to read a BMW 5 Series VIN
Every 5 Series has a 17-character VIN. Here is an example:
WBA 53BJ0 X M W 123456
Example VIN for illustration only.
| Characters | In this VIN | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 · WMI | WBA | BMW AG, Germany. An M5 starts with WBS (BMW M GmbH). |
| 4–7 · Model type code | 53BJ | BMW’s type code. It identifies the exact model and drivetrain, for example 530i vs 540i, or rear-wheel drive vs xDrive. |
| 8 · Vehicle code | 0 | Additional vehicle information such as the restraint system. |
| 9 · Check digit | X | A calculated value that confirms the VIN is valid. It can be a number from 0 to 9 or the letter X. |
| 10 · Model year | M | The model year: M is 2021. |
| 11 · Plant code | W | The BMW assembly plant. |
| 12–17 · Serial number | 123456 | The unique production number of that car. |

5 | 2005 | C | 2012 | K | 2019 |

8 | 2008 | F | 2015 | N | 2022 |
9 | 2009 | G | 2016 | P | 2023 |

BMW i5: the electric 5 Series
Since the 2024 model year, the 5 Series is also sold as the all-electric i5, in two US versions: the rear-wheel-drive i5 eDrive40 and the dual-motor i5 M60 xDrive. The i5 looks almost identical to a gas 530i or 540i, so a VIN decode is the quickest way to confirm what you are buying. When checking a used i5, also ask about charging history and how much of the high-voltage battery warranty is left.
BMW 5 Series recalls
Recalls are issued for specific VINs, so two 5 Series of the same year can have different results. Repairs for safety recalls are free at any BMW center, even if you are not the first owner. Two well-known campaigns affected older 5 Series:
- Takata airbag inflators: 2000–2003 5 Series (E39) were part of the Takata airbag recall.
- High-pressure fuel pump: 2008–2010 535i models with the N54 twin-turbo engine were recalled for the high-pressure fuel pump.
Enter the VIN above to see every recall on record for that exact car and whether it is still open.
Common BMW 5 Series problems by generation
These are issues that owners and independent mechanics often report. They don’t affect every car, but they are worth checking on a used 5 Series:
| Generation | Often reported | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| G60 (2024–) | Too new for long-term trends; early cars receive software updates | Recalls and software updates done, battery and charging on the i5 |
| G30 (2017–2023) | Generally good reliability, especially the 540i with the B58 six | Service history; oil consumption on the V8 M550i |
| F10 (2011–2016) | The N63 V8 in the 550i is known for oil consumption, timing chain and valve stem seal repairs; timing chain wear on the N20 four in the 2012–2015 528i | Proof of V8 repairs or BMW service campaign work, timing chain records, oil leaks |
| E60 (2004–2010) | High-pressure fuel pump and turbo issues on the N54 535i; electrical and iDrive faults; oil leaks | Fuel pump and turbo repair receipts, all electronics working |
How to verify a 540i, M550i or xDrive
Higher-performance 5 Series cost much more, so some cars are re-badged to look like a better model. To check:
- Decode the VIN and read the model name and engine it returns.
- Compare them with the trunk badge and the seller’s listing.
- Check the drivetrain: an xDrive car will show all-wheel drive in the decode.
- If the VIN says 530i but the car is badged 540i or M550i, it is not that model.
Where to find the VIN on a BMW 5 Series

- Dashboard: on the driver’s side, visible through the lower windshield.
- Driver’s door pillar: on the label on the B-pillar when the door is open.
- Under the hood: also stamped in the engine bay on many models.
- Documents: title, registration and insurance card.
Buying a used BMW 5 Series: checklist
- The VIN on the dashboard, door pillar and title all match.
- The model and engine from the VIN match the badge and the listing.
- No open safety recalls, or proof they were completed.
- No salvage, flood or rebuilt title brand, and odometer readings that go up steadily.
- Service records, including oil changes at the recommended interval.
- On V8 models (550i, M550i), ask about oil consumption and any engine repairs.
- On a 530e, 550e or i5, ask about the battery and charging history.
- Check what is left of the factory warranty or BMW Certified Pre-Owned coverage.
- A pre-purchase inspection by a BMW specialist.
Before you buy, run a full vehicle history check to see title brands, accidents, odometer readings and past sales, or see a sample report.
Options and window sticker
The VIN shows the model, engine, drivetrain, plant and year. Factory options such as the M Sport package, Premium Package, driver-assistance packages or paint color are stored in BMW’s build record, not in the VIN. A BMW center can look them up by VIN.
BMW 5 Series VIN FAQs
Where is the VIN on a BMW 5 Series?
