What our free BMW VIN decoder shows

One VIN, the key facts about any BMW. When you enter a BMW VIN, the decoder reads the codes built into those 17 characters and matches them to records from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In a few seconds you see:

  • Model and series: whether it is a 3 Series, X5, i4 or another BMW.
  • Model year: taken from the 10th character of the VIN.
  • Engine and drivetrain: engine size, fuel type and whether the car has xDrive all-wheel drive.
  • Body style: sedan, coupe, convertible, wagon or SUV.
  • Assembly plant: the factory that built the car.
  • Open safety recalls: any recall on record with NHTSA for that exact VIN.

This is useful when you are looking at a used BMW for sale, ordering parts, booking a service or checking that a listing matches the actual car.

How to look up a BMW VIN

  1. Find the 17-character VIN on the car or its paperwork (see where to find it below).
  2. Type it into the box at the top of this page. Letters are not case-sensitive.
  3. Select Decode VIN.
  4. Review the specs and recall status. If anything does not match the seller’s description, ask questions before you buy.

A valid VIN never contains the letters I, O or Q, because they look too much like the numbers 1 and 0. If the decoder rejects a VIN, check for those letters first.

Where to find the VIN on a BMW

Where to find the VIN on a vehicle: on the dashboard by the windshield and on the label inside the driver’s door jamb
The VIN is usually on the dashboard (seen through the windshield) and on the label inside the driver’s door.
  • Dashboard: on the lower corner of the dashboard on the driver’s side. Look through the windshield from outside the car.
  • Driver’s door jamb: on the sticker on the door pillar (B-pillar), visible when the door is open.
  • Engine bay: on many models it is also stamped near the top of the strut tower or on the firewall.
  • Documents: the title, registration and insurance card all list the VIN.

Make sure the VIN on the car matches the VIN on the title. If they are different, walk away: it can be a sign of a stolen or rebuilt vehicle.

Popular BMW models

Pick a model to decode its VIN and see recalls by model year:

  • BMW 3 Series: BMW’s best-known sport sedan and one of the most common used BMWs in the US.
  • BMW 5 Series: the midsize luxury sedan, often bought used after a lease.
  • BMW 4 Series: coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe versions based on the 3 Series.
  • BMW X1: the smallest BMW SUV.
  • BMW X3: the compact SUV and one of BMW’s best sellers.
  • BMW X5: the midsize SUV built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
  • BMW X7: the largest BMW SUV, with three rows of seats.

BMW recalls and how to check them

NHTSA lists 313 recall campaigns for the BMW models on this page. Recalls are issued for specific VINs, so two cars of the same model and year can have different results. The repair for a safety recall is free at any BMW dealer, even if you are not the first owner.

To check a BMW for recalls, enter its VIN above. If a recall is open, contact a BMW dealer to book the repair, and ask the seller of a used car to show proof that past recalls were completed.

BMW VIN FAQs

How do I decode a BMW VIN?

Type the 17-character VIN into the box at the top of this page and select Decode VIN. We read the manufacturer, model, engine and year codes and match them to NHTSA data.

Is the BMW VIN decoder free?

Yes. Decoding the specs and checking for open recalls is free and does not require an account. A full vehicle history report is a separate paid option.

What do the first three characters of a BMW VIN mean?

They are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI). WBA, for example, is BMW AG in Germany, and 5UX is BMW Manufacturing in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Which character shows the BMW model year?

The 10th character. L stands for 2020, P for 2023 and S for 2025.

Does a BMW VIN show recalls?

Yes. Safety recalls are issued by VIN, so checking the exact VIN tells you whether a recall applies to that car and whether it is still open.

Can a VIN decoder show BMW option codes or the window sticker?

No. The VIN encodes the model, body, engine, plant and year. Factory option codes and the original window sticker are stored by BMW, so you need a BMW dealer or a build-sheet service for those.
