What the Toyota Camry VIN decoder shows

The Camry has been sold in the US with four-cylinder, V6 and hybrid powertrains, and since the 2025 model year it is hybrid-only. The same trim name can mean a different engine depending on the year, so the VIN is the safest way to know what you are buying. Our decoder shows:

  • Generation and model year: XV30, XV40, XV50, XV70 or XV80.
  • Engine and powertrain: 2.4L or 2.5L four-cylinder, 3.0L, 3.3L or 3.5L V6, or hybrid.
  • Drivetrain: front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (offered again since 2020).
  • Assembly plant: Kentucky, Indiana or Japan.
  • Open safety recalls: any recall on record with NHTSA for that exact VIN.

Good to know: the V6 and all gas-only Camrys ended after the 2024 model year. A 2025-or-newer XSE is a hybrid four-cylinder, while a 2018–2024 XSE could have a V6.

Camry Hybrid and AWD: how to confirm

A Camry Hybrid looks almost the same as a gas Camry, and all-wheel drive was not offered on the Camry between 1991 and 2020. A VIN decode shows the hybrid powertrain and the drivetrain, so you can confirm both before you pay for them. Since 2025 every Camry is a hybrid, and AWD is available on all trims.

Toyota Camry recalls

Recalls are issued for specific VINs, so two Camrys of the same year can have different results. Repairs for safety recalls are free at any Toyota dealer, even if you are not the first owner. Important Camry campaigns include:

  • Accelerator pedal and floor mats (2009–2010): 2007–2010 Camry were part of Toyota’s sticking-pedal and floor-mat recalls.
  • Power window switch (2012): 2007–2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid were recalled because the driver’s power window master switch can overheat and catch fire.
  • Fuel pump (2020): 2018–2020 Camry were recalled because the low-pressure fuel pump can fail and stall the engine.
  • Brake vacuum pump (2021): 2018–2019 Camry were recalled because a broken pump vane can cause a sudden loss of brake assist.
  • Wheel lug nuts (2023): some 2023 Camry and Camry Hybrid were recalled because a wheel can come loose; owners were told not to drive until repaired.

Enter the VIN above to see every recall on record for that exact vehicle and whether it is still open.

Common Toyota Camry problems by generation

These are issues that owners and mechanics often report. They don’t affect every vehicle, but they are worth checking on a used one:

GenerationOften reportedWhat to check
XV80 (2025–)Too new for long-term trendsRecalls and software updates completed
XV70 (2018–2024)Fuel pump and brake vacuum pump recalls on early yearsRecalls completed, smooth idle, firm brake pedal
XV50 (2012–2017)Torque converter shudder at 25–50 mph on certain 2012–2014 Camry (Toyota warranty program ZE5)No shudder on a test drive, transmission records
XV40 (2007–2011)Oil consumption on certain 2007–2009 Camry and 2007–2011 Camry Hybrid with the 2.4L (Toyota program ZE7); cracked or sticky dashboard on 2010–2011 Camry and 2009–2011 Hybrid (program ZJA)Oil level and blue smoke, dashboard surface, window switch recall done

How to verify a V6, TRD or Hybrid Camry

V6, TRD and Hybrid versions cost more, and the badges are easy to add. To check:

  1. Decode the VIN and read the engine it returns.
  2. Compare it with the badge and the seller’s listing.
  3. A Camry TRD (2020–2024) always has the 3.5L V6.
  4. If the VIN shows a four-cylinder but the car is badged V6 or TRD, it is not that model.

Where to find the VIN on a Toyota Camry

Where to find the VIN on a vehicle: on the dashboard by the windshield and on the label inside the driver’s door jamb
The VIN is on the dashboard (seen through the windshield) and on the label inside the driver’s door.
  • Dashboard: on the driver’s side, visible through the lower windshield.
  • Driver’s door pillar: on the label on the B-pillar when the door is open.
  • Documents: title, registration and insurance card.

Buying a used Toyota Camry: checklist

  • The VIN on the dashboard, door pillar and title all match.
  • The engine and drivetrain from the VIN match the listing (four-cylinder, V6 or Hybrid; FWD or AWD).
  • No open safety recalls, or proof they were completed.
  • No salvage, flood or rebuilt title brand, and odometer readings that go up steadily.
  • On a 2007–2009 Camry with the 2.4L, check oil use.
  • On a 2012–2014 Camry, no shudder at 25–50 mph.
  • On a Hybrid, no hybrid warning lights.
  • A pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic you trust.

Before you buy, run a full vehicle history check to see title brands, accidents, odometer readings and past sales, or see a sample report.

Options and window sticker

The VIN shows the model, engine, drivetrain, plant and year. Packages, paint color and dealer-installed accessories are stored in Toyota’s build record, not fully in the VIN. A Toyota dealer can look them up by VIN.
